Building History

Pyon-Chen Hall is named in honor of two fearless trailblazers, Pyon Su, and Chunjen Constant Chen. In 1891, Pyon Su became the first Korean student to receive a degree from any American college or university. Chunjen Constant Chen was the first Chinese student to enroll at the Maryland Agricultural College in 1915. They will forever be symbols of opportunity and progress and whose resolve and determination to succeed against all odds serve as an inspiration to all Terps. Pyon-Chen Hall is the first of two residence halls located in the Heritage Community.

Building Services

Housekeeping Service Hours:

  • Weekdays: Services run from Monday to Friday, starting at 7:30 a.m. and ending by mid-afternoon. We minimize disruption to residents' routines.
  • Weekends: Reduced service with restrooms and lounges cleaned once on Saturdays. No regular services on Sundays, which is a day off for our staff.
  • Emergency Services: Our team remains on call at all times. Available 24/7 through our Service Center at 301-314-9675.

Trash Removal

Residents are required to place their trash and recycling in the trash rooms located on each floor of the residence hall. Housekeeping will remove the trash from the trash rooms twice daily, Monday through Friday, ensuring a clean and tidy environment.

HVAC System

Air Conditioned Building with HVAC System Capable of Switching Between Heating and Cooling

Pyon-Chen Hall’s automated HVAC system adjusts between heating and cooling based on indoor and outdoor temperatures. Each fan coil unit serves 2–6 rooms and operates based on the majority preference—if most rooms request heat, all will be heated. The system runs until all rooms reach their set temperatures. A wall-mounted thermostat near the door allows residents to adjust the temperature, change fan modes, and request a switch between heating and cooling.
