Design Criteria/Facility Standards

Home Projects & Initiatives Design Criteria/Facility Standards

The Design Criteria/Facility Standards (DC/FS) Manual provides essential design guidelines for architects, engineers, and professionals working on University of Maryland facilities. This document, created by Facilities Management, ensures that all projects meet the university's standards for quality, safety, and functionality. The DC/FS Manual applies to the University of Maryland College Park and its client institutions.

Housing-Specific Requirements

The Department of Residential Facilities is a fully functioning facilities organization with unique requirements that may not apply to other university facilities. To address these needs, the Department of Residential Facilities, in collaboration with Facilities Management, is drafting an addendum to the DC/FS Manual.

Focus of the Addendum

This addendum will focus entirely on housing, guiding professionals when deviations from the standard DC/FS Manual are necessary. It draws from extensive experience in designing, constructing, operating, and maintaining housing facilities. The addendum will be used in preparing documents for new buildings and renovations.

Timeline for Competition

The addendum is expected to be completed by Fall 2026. Until then, the existing DC/FS Manual will continue to serve as the primary document for housing standards. For any deviations in housing projects, the Department of Residential Facilities will provide guidance.

Stay tuned for updates!
