Upgrades Underway in the Ellicott Community

Home Upgrades Underway in the Ellicott Community

Exciting news — two University of Maryland residence halls are receiving significant improvements that will enhance the residential experience for current and future Terps.

Residential Facilities, Resident Life and Facilities Management are collaborating on upgrades to Ellicott Hall and Hagerstown Hall as part of the university's long-term investment in the Maryland Residential Experience. The project represents an important step in Maryland's commitment to providing comfortable and cost-effective housing that supports student success.

Ellicott Hall Upgrades

Originally built in 1967, Ellicott Hall is receiving upgrades designed to improve comfort, functionality and building systems.

Planned upgrades include:

  • New windows throughout the building
  • Installation of window heat pump units that provide heating and air conditioning
  • Renovated bathrooms
  • Electrical system upgrades

To accommodate construction, Ellicott Hall closed in May 2026 and will remain closed through January 2027.

In the video below, Senior Construction Project Manager, Patricia E. Carey takes you inside Ellicott Hall to discuss the project and provide a preview of the future bathrooms.

Hagerstown Hall Upgrades

Following the work underway in Ellicott Hall, improvements are also being evaluated for Hagerstown Hall. Residential Facilities and Resident Life are currently reviewing designs and coordinating initial plans. As more details become available, Resident Life will share updates via email, through floor meetings and posted notices. Please be sure to check your university email regularly.

The Ellicott and Hagerstown renovation project reflects the university's ongoing commitment to creating residence halls where all on-campus residents can thrive. Once completed, the upgrades will provide Terps with more comfortable and efficient living spaces while honoring the history and legacy of these two important residence halls.
