New Recycling Requirement at UMD: No Bags in the Bin

Home New Recycling Requirement at UMD: No Bags in the Bin
Graphic showing that recycling must go in the bin loose, not in plastic bags.

The University of Maryland has made an important change to campus recycling: all recyclables must go in the bin loose, not in plastic bags.

Why the change?
UMD recently switched to a new recycling processor that does not accept plastic liners in recycling loads. Any recyclables collected in plastic bags will be rejected and sent to the landfill. Read Campus Recycling Shifts to Bag-Free System for more information.

Why it matters to you
A can or bottle tossed loose in the bin can be recycled into something new. But if it’s placed in a plastic bag, it won’t be recycled at all. By following this rule and sharing it with others, you can have a big impact on ensuring the new recycling system succeeds.
