Chestertown Hall Renovation: A Showcase of DRF Excellence

A DRF Success Story told by Associate Director of Planning, Design & Construction — Henry Dickson

This past year, the Department of Residential Facilities (DRF) demonstrated what it means to deliver results Fearlessly Forward with the successful renovation of Chestertown Hall.

An ambitious transformation project with the goal of opening the residence hall in August 2025 to welcome students and RAs for the new academic year. Thanks to vision, determination, and teamwork, DRF completed the project on time at a cost of approximately $2.5 million.

The scope of work was extensive and touched nearly every part of the building. DRF oversaw the complete transformation of community bathrooms on all four floors, replaced critical domestic water supply and drain risers in multiple locations, modernized the first-floor student lounge, and renovated the study/classroom space.  Additional improvements included upgrades to housekeeping closets, ground-level housekeeping spaces, and installation of new electrical outlets to support the addition of window air conditioning units. These changes have not only refreshed the building but also enhanced the daily living and learning experience for Chestertown’s residents.

What made this accomplishment especially impressive was the spirit of collaboration across units. Led by Senior Project Managers, Patricia Carey and Tony Gourley, the Planning, Design, and Construction (PDC) team partnered seamlessly with Facilities Maintenance to divide and conquer the complex workload. Facilities Maintenance handled the installation of new window units and improvements to ground-level housekeeping areas, while PDC oversaw the design, engineering, and construction management of new electrical, plumbing, fire protection, mechanical systems, bathrooms, lounges, offices, and more. This teamwork demonstrated the department’s unique ability to leverage specialized expertise while working toward a shared goal.

The modernization of Chestertown Hall supports student success and collaboration by enhancing the environment where students live, meet, share ideas, and build a sense of community. Residents now enjoy upgraded amenities, more reliable systems, and inviting spaces that make their hall a true home away from home.
The Chestertown Hall renovation is a shining example of DRF’s commitment to excellence, collaboration and service to the University of Maryland community.

Congratulations to everyone involved in making Chestertown Hall a success story and a point of pride for the Department of Residential Facilities.
